Presbyterian Homes announced last Friday that workers will drive about 20 test piles into three sites in the Wayzata Bay Center parking lot the week of Feb. 16 to 21. Long sections of pipe 7 to 9 inches in diameter, the piles will be driven to various depths, the deepest estimated to be about 120 feet. They will be of two varieties - foundation supports and so-called "energy piles," which will have geothermal piping in them. The piles will be tested over multiple weeks to confirm the load-bearing capacity of the foundation piles and the geothermal capacity of the energy piles. At the conclusion of the tests, the foundation design can be finalized and engineers can determine the scope that geothermal energy will play in both heating and cooling the new Bay Center. In a story by Marc Ingber posted to our website over the weekend, Ed Briesemeister, managing director of the Wayzata Bay Redevelopment Company, said that "a major theme of the Bay Center Redevelopment has been sustainability and minimizing resource use wherever possible" and that this is another exam of that objective. The Orono City Council will meet tonight at 7 pm The council will consider a conditional use permit for the Wayzata Country Club, which hopes to convert a ditch with wetland qualities to a pond and to excavate three other areas on the property to provide for replacement of the wetland. Good afternoon Wayzata, Orono and Long Lake. I'm Sun-Sailor Community Editor Jared Huizenga. Today is Thursday, Feb. 26, and today we'll be taking a look at some of the stories featured in this week's edition of the Sun-Sailor, which hits newsstands today. • The top story from last week was the Long Lake City Council's appointment of long-time finance director Terry Post to the position of city administrator. As I wrote, if there had been opposition to the appointment, it could have made for a tense few moments in city hall, as it was Post who presented the motion to the city council to appoint Post to the position of city administrator. After a brief pause and a slightly awkward chuckle, Post made the recommendation and reminded the council that City Attorney Joel Jamnick had informed them that it needed a "super majority" to pass the motion. The vote surpassed that, as the council unanimously approved the motion. "I'm glad you're willing to take on the extra responsibilities," Gilbert said before joking that he probably should have handled the presentation. "I'd like to thank the council for having confidence in me," Post said. And that confidence that the council has in Post's abilities shows in the updated job description for the city administrator. Good afternoon Wayzata, Orono and Long Lake. I'm Sun-Sailor Community Editor Jared Huizenga. Today is Monday, Feb. 16, and this is what's going on in your area today. • Over the weekend the Wayzata High School Dance Team captured first place in the AAA 2009 State Girls' Dance Team Tournament held Saturday at Target Center. Samantha Cameranesi and Vanessa Iorio were named to the AAA All-Tournament team. The only other team in the Sun-Sailor coverage area that placed in the tournament was Benilde-St. Margaret's, which took first place in the AA tournament. • The Wayzata City Council will meet early tomorrow morning to discuss a couple of issues facing the city. The council will hold its regular meeting at 7 am, rather than its normal 7 pm start time. During that meeting the council is expected to approve the bid for the water treatment facility no. 3 and water storage project. City staff is recommending awarding the bid to Municipal Builders, Inc. - who gave a total base bid of $3823210. At 7:30 am the council will adjourn to a closed executive session to discuss the potential purchase of the property at 800 Superior Blvd. • In case anyone is wondering what the noise and large machinery at the Wayzata Bay Center this week is all about, just a reminder that test piles will be driven in various areas in the center parking lot this week.
